This kind of user is typically working without the benefit of assistants, so the remote and recallable mic preamp settings introduced to Carbon in 2021.10 will be extremely welcome. Those who have used it - and I’ve had a unit since it was released - will know just how well the features and workflow address the needs of the user who needs a latency‑free Pro Tools tracking experience for recording bands. The release of Carbon was proof, if it were needed, that Avid haven’t forgotten about project‑studio users. Only when a fully M1‑compatible version of Pro Tools software is released will the program be able to run completely natively on Apple Silicon, but until then, HDX users will be able to use their systems, with an appropriate chassis, on an M1 Mac. This means that hardware‑based Pro Tools systems can now run on M1 Macs. This has changed in 2021.10 with the release of a Universal Binary HD driver that supports Apple Silicon natively. Without a suitable HD driver, HDX systems have been excluded from the ‘M1 via Rosetta’ party. However, users of Pro Tools HDX systems haven’t been able to use their hardware on M1 Macs because although applications can run using Rosetta, drivers cannot. At the time of writing, Pro Tools software is compatible with Apple Silicon‑based Macs via Rosetta 2, but it is not yet natively supported. The potential for confusion about whether a ‘native’ Pro Tools system is software‑only Pro Tools or the confusingly titled HD Native hardware can get messy, and the same has to be said of the language used to describe Apple Silicon compatibility. The word ‘native’ has always been one that needs careful attention in the Pro Tools world. There’s also some very welcome news for HDX users anticipating upgrading their Apple computers to one of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max machines announced in October. Although not a milestone like 2021.6, which offered huge performance gains courtesy of the Hybrid Engine, this double release brought some useful improvements for music production. In the closing days of October, Avid announced the release of Pro Tools 2021.10 and Eucon 2021.10. The latest Pro Tools and Eucon updates offer much to both pro- and project‑studio users. This not only provides extended recorded times for long form productions or recording events, but gives you the added security of always having a back-up to your camera recording.The preamps on Avid’s Carbon interface can now be remotely controlled directly from within Pro Tools, or via the Avid Control app. SSD media also provides more GB per $ than camera media cards. A core principle of Atomos devices is to provide much more flexibility in terms of recording codec, resolution, and frame rate than is normally available with internal recording. With Ninja V the only limitation to how much you can record is the size of the SSD. The AtomX SSDmini drives are able to record up to 150 minutes of 4K ProRes. They support up to 4TB storage, sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s and write speeds up to 500MB/s. AtomX SSDmini drives are more compact than standard SATA SSDs and offer an affordable alternative to an SD card of similar capacity or performance. Ninja V supports removable SSD drives which provide the space and sustained performance to meet these needs. The ability to record up to 6K using advanced edit-ready formats including ProRes RAW, ProRes, and DNxHD/HR requires fast, robust, and expansive storage. Optional via ATOMOS CONNECT or AtomX SDI modules Ninja V is designed to maximize the quality of your videos and allow you to extend every aspect of your creative vision. Additionally, if you’re shooting Log footage, the ability to bypass internal compression will offer the best possible dynamic range. Ninja V can record more color information and immediately add value to your production with your existing camera rig. If the camera is able to output video via HDMI, the quality can often be preserved in a 4:2:2 8-bit or 10-bit format. To save space and support longer recordings, many cameras record compressed 4:2:0 8-bit video internally.
